Woodlands Historic Park Bugs

Gumtree Hopper (Eurymeloides pulchra) with ants on Red Gum sapling at Woodlands Historic Park
Gumtree Hopper with ants, early January. Length 10-11mm. This is by far the most common hopper on Red Gum

Like most sap-sucking insects, Gumtree Hoppers excrete excess sugars and some other nutrients in a substance called honeydew, a drop of which can be seen in the above photo. The honeydew is harvested by ants in a mutually beneficial relationship.
