Woodlands Historic Park
Rats Tail Grass (Sporobolus africanus)

Rat's-tail Grass is said to be unpalatable to stock but seems to be readily eaten by Kangaroos. Hence it is a lower priority for control in Woodlands Historic Park than Chilean Needle Grass or Serrated Tussock. It is also considerably less common.

Biological Control

A search for biological control agents for Sporobolus africanus and other invasive Sporobolus species was started in southern Africa in 2000. A leaf smut Ustilago sporoboli-indici and a stem wasp Tetramesa sp. were considered worthy of further study. The leaf smut was found to infect four Australian native Sporobolus species, while all attempts to rear the stem wasp failed. Hence the prospects for biological control of invasive Sporobolus species are not considered good. (Palmer 2008).
