Woodlands Historic Park Insects

Tailed Emperor (Charaxes sempronius sempronius) at Woodlands Historic Park
Tailed Emperor (Charaxes sempronius sempronius), late Dec.

Wingspan: 75 to 85 mm

The caterpillars of this butterfly feed on wattles and other legumes. According to Field in "Butterflies: Identification and life history" it has regularly been seen in Victoria since 1974 but is not permanently established, and most specimens have been seen in late summer or Autumn unlike the above individual. The photo is of a male waiting for a mate at the summit of Gellibrand Hill. There was still a battle-scarred male there in mid February, possibly the same one - I hope he had some success in the meantime!
