This bolete is mycorrhizal with Pine trees and very common near them, either solitary or in groups. It is symmetrical with a slimy brown top when newly emerged, but later expands to an irregular shape, the largest being 110mm across. The stem remains cylindrical and becomes dotted with the brown granules after which it is named. Spores are yellow-brown.
