The largest specimens of this fungus seen were about 230mm across.

This species occurs singly or in pairs under mature Red Gums on which it is mycorrhizal, and is common in some years. It has not been seen under other Eucalyptus species. It is sometimes attacked by the Bolete Eater mould, although nowhere near as commonly as the Brown Bolete.

The gills stain blue-green when bruised. They are sometimes forked and have many ridges and flaps, nearly all more than halfway from the stem, sometimes not visible at the bottom edge of the gill.
