Woodlands Historic Park Flies

Thick-headed Fly at Woodlands Historic Park
Thick-headed Fly

We have only seen this species once in Woodlands Historic Park.

Note that the antennae of this species resembles that of suborder Brachycera, rather than those of almost all other species in division Cyclorrhapha. The high level classification of flies is based on many characteristics, not just the antennae, on which I have based my one-line definitions because they are the most distinctive characteristic visible in photos of adults. The term Cyclorrhapha actually means "Circular-crack" and refers to the way the pupal case splits to allow the emergence of the adult.
